Individualized Curriculum

The list below includes suggested rotations to fulfill the individualized curriculum that will help prepare residents to be lifelong participants in their communities and advocates for families.

  • One month in Pediatricians in Community rotation.  This month is completed by all pediatric residents.
  • One month in Media and Health Policy
  • One month rotation: Medical Homes for Vulnerable Populations (Foster Care clinic, Teen HIV clinic, School Based Health Center at Jennings High School)
  • Two months of independent electives for project implementation


Each resident will be required to complete a literature review on an advocacy/community pediatrics topic of interest. The purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of a specific advocacy concern, upon which residents can build additional expertise in other areas of advocacy.


We pair all Track members with a mentor who is a local leader in community pediatrics/ advocacy. We plan to utilize the faculty physicians coordinating the Track at the four programs as mentors. These mentors will support the residents with project development, assist with accessing advocacy-oriented experiences, and monitor progress in the pathway. They will serve as a point person for each resident’s advocacy career development. We will also try to identify a community based organization mentor so residents’ projects are informed by community input and knowledge.

How are Track members selected?

Admission into the MOCARE Advocacy Track will require a strong interest in community pediatrics and child advocacy with a commitment to developing a career around child and community health. Two residents will be selected from the Intern class annually and application and selection will be in the PL1 year. To be eligible for the Track, residents must be in good standing with the residency program.

Applicants should submit their CV and a personal statement explaining any past advocacy experience, why they are interested in the Track, and their career goals involving advocacy and or population health.
