Global Health Pathway
Washington University puts great emphasis on global health and global health research, and there are many opportunities for travelling abroad to participate in research projects and practice medicine. We have ties with programs in Malawi, Ethiopia, Honduras, and Guatemala, to name a few. Residents have also recently traveled to Liberia, Poland, and Israel. Pediatric residents are encouraged to go abroad during elective months, and there are many scholarships available for reimbursement for airfare, vaccinations, and living expenses.
Global health is included in our curriculum in the form of lectures and journal clubs, and pediatric residents can also take advantage of the Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine global health lecture series. Our residents have loved their international rotations, where they have the opportunity to not only learn how healthcare is delivered in other countries, but also learn to diagnose and treat tropical and vaccine preventable illness.
