Guatemala

In partnership with physician teams at four local hospitals – Roosevelt Hospital, Hospital Infantil de Infectología y Rehabilitación, Unidad de Cirugia Cardiovascular Pediátrica de Guatemala (UNICAR), and Unidad Nacional de Oncología Pediátrica (UNOP) – pediatric residents from Washington University are offered a unique, in depth clinical experience in both general pediatrics and in various inpatient pediatric subspecialties, including infectious diseases, malnutrition, cardiology, hematology/oncology, and critical care medicine.  Spanish is the national language of Guatemala. Several faculty members are fluent in both English and Spanish, but formal medical instruction and medical records are kept only in Spanish. Of note, all rotating pediatric residents are provided with apartment style housing, personal transportation and cell phone service during their stay.
