The Department of Pediatrics aims to spark interest in developmental biology — particularly human growth and development — while providing students with a solid foundation to understand clinical pediatric issues, regardless of their future medical specialty.
Our primary clinical and research facilities are located at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH), with newborn services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. SLCH has 402 licensed beds, including:
- 56 pediatric intensive care beds
- 122-bed newborn intensive care unit
- 16-bed pediatric bone marrow transplant unit
SLCH treats patients up to 21 years of age with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The hospital averages 11,000 admissions annually, and pediatric ambulatory care — including subspecialty and emergency visits — totals about 90,000 visits per year. Additionally, nearly 5,000 infants are born annually on the Washington University Medical Campus.
