Ana María Arbeláez, MD, MSCI, researches the long-term effects of diabetes in the brain, as well as the role of the brain in the inability of patients with diabetes to recognize and respond to hypoglycemia, which is the most common complication of living with the disease. She uses innovative in-vivo imaging technologies and new technologies for insulin delivery and blood glucose monitoring in her human studies. Given that hypoglycemia can cause cardiovascular events and death she has been conducting a study looking at the effects that hypoglycemia has on heart function and heart rate variability. Through the multicenter DirecNet study and a longstanding collaboration with Tamara Hershey, PhD, she has been looking at the effects of diabetes on brain structure, function and cognition in children.
