All applicants must apply through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
A complete application consists of the following:
- Dean’s letter/Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
- Transcript of medical school grades
- USMLE Step 1 transcript and Step 2 score (if completed) or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 reports
- Personal statement
- Three or four letters of recommendation written by physicians with whom you have worked during medical training, ideally one from Pediatrics
- Valid or anticipated Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) certificate for international medical graduates
Applications are reviewed based on the above requirements. Application deadlines and required paperwork are ERAS defined and can be found on the ERAS website. The selection process is completed through The Match®, administered by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Fast facts
- We accept students graduating from foreign medical schools.
- ECFMG certification is required before the ranking deadline and preferred by the time of interview.
- St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) prefers to hire J-1 visa holders. However, SLCH will sponsor H-1B visas in the following cases:
- H-4 spouses transitioning to H-1B
- Graduates moving from OPT (F-1 visa) to H-1B
- Applicants already holding an H-1B visa
- We prefer no more than three years from graduation date.
- Clinical or hospital experience is required within the last three years (observerships and externships acceptable; international experience is permitted).
- We participate exclusively in the ERAS application process and fill positions through the NRMP Match.
- We do not offer observerships, externships or research programs prior to residency.
- We do not offer pre-interviews or pre-matches.
The interview
All interview invitations will be sent to you via email through Thalamus, an online system that will allow you to accept or decline your invitation and schedule (or reschedule) your interview date. Once you schedule an interview date, you will receive further information via email.
As recommended by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), all pediatric residency interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
Most interviews are held during October, November, December and January.
Optional second-look days will be offered in February. To ensure equity and minimize pressure to attend, the residency rank list will be finalized and submitted to the local Graduate Medical Education (GME) office prior to second-look events and will not be subject to change.
The Department of Pediatrics maintains a policy of not pursuing additional recruiting activities after candidates’ visits. This should not be interpreted as a lack of interest. WashU Medicine is committed to recruiting enthusiastic, compassionate and capable physicians.
Interviews for all MD/PhD residency applicants will take place over two-day blocks in October, November, December or January. MD/PhD applicants will receive an invitation indicating when these may be scheduled.
